Description

A work by Masaki Okuten, an artist who creates while choosing each move as if he is playing a board game where he thinks about each development as they come without sketching or preparing a draft. He states that the only things that exist during his creative process are the act of painting to approach the things he wants to express and the placement of children’s scribbling to be copied onto the masking tape.
The children’s scribbling that is ultimately revealed when the masking tape is removed serves as a symbolic image in this work that makes you think of the necessity of accidents.

■Technique/Material: Oil, acrylic, canvas on panel, 2020

Masaki Okuten

An artist whose style is to add layers of painting over children’s scribbling that has been copied onto masking tape. The noise-like children’s scribbling that appears when the masking tape is removed at the end of the creative process exudes a sense of its necessity as the core of the work through its balance, placement, and colors.
His works that are created through a style that essentially contradicts common practices for painting give off a static impression that is strangely balanced while triggering a feeling of danger.
The artist describes his own creative style as follows. “To me, I believe that the more I paint and the more descriptive I get, the more suffocating the work becomes. I believe that a minimal thought process of what should not be done when painting, rather than what should be done when painting, is a more complete process for painting.” Further, he states, “A work that points to the core despite being created beforehand by a small number of people using materials with a low degree of freedom. That is the process with which I would like to create works.”
At the same time that this artist’s paintings that appear perplexing at first glance showcase the content of the painting in the sense of the images and themes portrayed in it, the aspect of the work being a record of the creative process that an artist engaged in on a canvas carefully but with a spirit of challenge also stands out.
