An owl ornament for good luck
This owl sitting demurely on a Yuki-tsumugi cushion makes a very cute ornament.
The Japanese word for owl, "fukurou," has the same sound as a variety of auspicious phrases, such as "without hardship," "without the suffering of aging," "Mr. Good Luck" and "basket of luck." For this reason, owls are considered to be auspicious animals in Japan. In Europe, the owl is widely loved as a guardian of the forest and as a symbol of wisdom and sages.
The ornament combines Edo kiriko glass with sandblasting techniques. The front uses a woven octagon pattern, while the back has a nanako ("fish egg") pattern.
