Sano-machi, Nomi-shi, Ishikawa Prefecture <Seikou Kiln>

This establishment produces Kutani ware characterized by its transparency, depth of color, unique color tones, and expressive techniques that have been cultivated over decades. The Japanese paints used in traditional Kutani ware form a thick, transparent glass layer, creating deep colors and a luster on the surface that cannot reproduced with Western paints. By developing unique expression techniques and Japanese paints that take advantage of these characteristics, we are able to offer Kutani ware at an affordable price.

Kutani Ware

Kutani ware is a traditional craft in the south of Iwakawa Prefecture that has a history of approximately 360 years. The most distinctive feature of Kutani ware is its beautiful glassy surface, which is painted with a thick layer of five colors of paint called "Kutani Gosai" (the five colors of Kutani: red, yellow, green, purple, and dark blue).
Kutani ware began with Old Kutani in the early Edo period, and as many potters began operating kilns, they began producing Kutani ware in a variety of styles. In the Meiji era (1868-1912), Kutani ware was exported out to the world as, and was known as "Japan Kutani", thanks to the efforts of Shouza Kutani and others. The craft is currently one of Ishikawa’s greatest crafts, and is loved both throughout Japan and the world.
